"Just
get me a really big closet." -- Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah

 This
Cranston couple had a "walk-in" closet. But with a large
window on one side and a linen closet cutting into it from the hallway,
only one 5-foot bar fit in that "walk-in closet". The
solution was to use that "walk-in closet" space for a laundry
room on the second floor, and to use 30 square feet of their large bedroom
to create a 10' wide reach-in closet, complete with a California Closets®
type organizer.

This
couple's closet, although wide, did not hold very much with
its standard one bar and one shelf and bi-fold doors that always come
off the track. They wanted to utilize the height of their 9-foot
ceilings within the closet. Even if we had put shelves higher in
the closet, the couple would not have been able to access them because
the closet was shallow and the standard height door would get in the way.

We
looked around and saw a huge, but almost empty, master bedroom, so we
suggested removing the closet altogether and framing a
small footprint walk-in closet 8' wide by 5' deep. This allowed
us to use the full vertical space (9 feet) and to get more hanging and
shelf space into this corner of the room, by only stealing 3 feet from
the room -- a pocket door that retracted into the new wall kept us from
needing any more space from the bedroom.

You're a problem solver.
— J.M., Warwick, when we built a small walk-in master closet where
there previously was none; stole space from the adjoining room to
expand bathroom storage; and added shelves to a small kitchen that
desperately needed storage. |
